Dear Visitor,

Welcome to the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Nations.

The United Nations in New York is the fulcrum of all global multilateral activities; it sets the agenda affecting both multilateral and bilateral relations. Indeed, the UN has distinguished itself as a centre to harmonise the actions of States for the achievement of common global objectives.

When Nigeria became the 99th member of the UN on 7 October 1960, it unequivocally committed to uphold the principles upon which the organisation was founded. Preserving global peace and security is a vital dimension of these principles. Also critical are the challenges of the global financial meltdown, disarmament, human rights, persistent poverty, climate change, and its attendant consequences on migration.

The Federal Government of Nigeria through its Permanent Mission in New York works in concert with other Nations States in the efforts to find; not only lasting and sustainable solutions to these global challenges, but also harmonize the actions of states to achieve collective objectives. We have included in this website, Nigeria’s maiden address to the United Nations which not only delineates her world view but also long term objectives and interests. I believe that this statement set the tone for Nigeria’s multilateral diplomacy.

I expect this website to provide the visitor with insights and enrich public understanding of Nigeria’s international objectives as well as its strategic foreign policy goals. I hope you find it rewarding. Please feel free to contact us.

U. Joy Ogwu, OFR
Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Nations
